
PBX stands for Private Branch eXchange. PBX telephone systems have evolved further with technical advancements to become automatic and be called PABX (Private Automatic Branch eXchange) and PMBX (Private Manual Branch eXchange). This term has become very prominent in the telecommunication industry especially with reference to business telephones.
The main advantages of PBX Telephone Systems are:
1. PBX Telephone Systems act as a connecting link between the public switched telephone network and the private business organization. It requires only one trunk line for its operations. If the PBX Telephone System is modular and flexible it can adjust to the growing nature of the organization. The number of extension lines can be increased.
2. It is connected to fax machines, other telephones and modems too. This facilitates branching at the business end where multiple utilities are possible.
3. PBX Telephone System selects the outgoing lines automatically. The only thing that one has to do is dial and escape code prior to selecting the outside number. In some of the latest phone systems there is no need of the escape code too.
