Fibre Optics

An Introduction to the world of fiber optics

What is Fiber-optics?

Fiber-optics is the science that deals with the design and application of the optical fiber network. The optical fiber is a thin wire about the size of a human hair that is used to transmit data using the principles of total internal reflection of light. Transmitting data through optical fibers ensures the transmission of signals without much data loss. Because of their thin size, optical fibers have many advantages over traditional copper wires and are fast replacing other conventional modes of data transmission due to their vas applications.

How does it work?

Not going into the technical aspects in detail, we can simply say that optical fibers work on the principle of total internal reflection of light. Total internal reflection is not an overly complicated concept in itself. When light enters a medium of greater density from a rarer medium, the opposite of refraction takes place. Instead of the light passing through the medium, it gets reflected. This principle is manipulated and deployed into the fiber optic network. In an optical fiber, the light is guided into the fiber and transmitted. Continue reading

Nationwide Fiber Optic Internet Providers Have the Fastest Internet

Some home Internet users have already switched to the fastest connections possible today with fiber optic Internet. This type of connection uses pulses of light that are sent through an optical fiber. Not every part of the United States has this super-speed connection, but many of the largest cities already have it for home use.

There are many fiber optic internet providers

Many companies provide fiber optic Internet. Large cell phone corporations advertise that they are the best, and cable companies claim that their optical fiber Internet is faster and more reliable. It can be confusing trying to decide which company to go with. There are also online companies that provide quotes from all of the major providers. When you simply enter your zip code at their website, they can let you know if the service is available in your state. They will also list the various companies who provide this service in your area. Many people do not realize that there are so many choices from which to choose. They think that they have one or two cell phone companies from which to choose, but there are actually a lot of others as well.

Who benefits from this service?

Fiber Optic Components – Connectors

A fiber optic connector terminates the end of an optical fiber and enables quicker connection and disconnection than splicing. The fibers are mechanically coupled and aligned so that light can pass. There have been many different connectors introduced through the development of fiber optic components in the past several years. Many companies and individuals have been trying to improve the features of certain connectors in order to gain control of the fiber optic industry but only few have been successful. As technology increases, many fiber optic components have become more affordable.

There are many different color codes for connectors and they have changed throughout the years. In the early stages of fiber optic history, orange, black or grey represented multimode connectors and yellow stood for singlemode. These original codes became difficult with the introduction of metallic connectors so colored boots were developed, like FC and ST. Now, beige boots stand for multimode, blue stands for singlemode and APC or angled connectors are represented by green boots.

Fiber Optic Network Cables

The words – fiber optic network cable is created as a kind of wires that carry signal and has become familiar to people today. Here are some more facts make people excited it at all.

The answer to the above lies in what these cables can do for one. These are not mere cables with all the conventional carrying speeds and obvious pitfalls. These cables do not carry conventional signal messages. Rather, they carry light waves as signals. As a result, the quality of the signal is top-notch. The security factor of such a signal is amazing. The speed of communication is exactly the same as light, because the signal is nothing but light waves.

The main benefits of using fiber optic network cables are listed below.

Immunity to interference leads of excellent signal quality: A more ordinary cable does not have sufficient bandwidth to protect against multiple signals being carried over the same channel. Also, external signals interfere with signals carried over more ordinary cables. This is never the case with fiber optic. Optical cable channels are well-immune against hindrance caused by external signals.

Light-based carrying of information leads to tremendous speed: Optical fibers carry the signal as light rays. Light is properly modulated and encoded to deliver the communication message packets. The speed of information carrying is tremendous – it is exactly as fast as light travels. Hence the experience of observation is true real-time. This is effective for Internet and television channel signals.

Knowing About Fiber Optics

Whenever people talk about the internet, the cable television system or the telephone system it is very likely that you hear about cables that are fiber optic. They are considered strands of optically pure thin glass that carry digital information over long distances. Mostly used in communication mediums due to the availability of a higher bandwith, these fiber optics will carry the light far longer than many other forms of electrical signal carriers.

Fiber optics communication systems have certainly developed the telecommunications industry and because of its advantages over electrical transmission, copper wire communications in core networks have been replaced by optical fibers. How it works is fiber optics are long, thin strands of pure thin glass that are arranged in bundles referred to as optical cables that are used to transmit light signals over long distances.

A single optical fiber consists of a core that is the thin glass center of the fiber where the light travels, cladding which is the outer optical material around the core that reflects the light back into the core and a buffer coating which is a plastic coating that protects the fibers from damage and moisture.

Due to its smooth transition, fiber optics are recommended for longer distant signal transmission. With minimum number of amplifiers these fiber optics calbles can carry the amount of data carried in many electrical wires. When fiber cables run alongside each other for long distances, they don’t experience crosstalk unlike some types of electrical transmission lines. Although fiber optics being higher in value, it will save some money in the longer run with less maintenance.
